Couples who are unable to conceive for the second time or even the third time are considered to be suffering from secondary infertility. Secondary infertility can bring about a number of challenging feelings such as grief, confusion, hopelessness, and even guilt. You might not even have imagined how difficult it is to have a baby.

What is Secondary Infertility?

There are two types of infertility: primary and secondary. Primary infertility describes not being able to get pregnant, usually after 1 year of trying or 6 months, if age 35 or over. Those who experience secondary infertility, on the other hand, have trouble conceiving after successfully becoming pregnant at least once before.

Just like primary infertility, secondary infertility can occur due to an issue at any point in the natural — and somewhat complicated — a process required to become pregnant. Your fertility can change even after the birth of a child.

The most common causes of secondary infertility are listed below.

Ovulation Disorders and PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome)

Most female infertility is caused by ovulation disorders. In fact, 40 percent of women with infertility do not ovulate consistently. One of the most common causes of female infertility is PCOS, which causes the ovaries or adrenal glands to produce too many hormones that prevent the ovaries from releasing eggs. It can also cause cysts to develop on the ovaries which can further interfere with ovulation.

Woman’s Age

Women are most fertile in their 20s and early 30s. In your late 30s, ovarian reserve or egg stores begin to deplete. This decline is seen in the quantity as well as in the quality of eggs produced. Also, the proportion of eggs with chromosomal abnormalities increases proportionally with age. Abnormal eggs are unable to lead to successful pregnancies and the chances of transmission of genetic defects to the child are also high. It is considered the most common cause of infertility.

The Health of the Uterus

If you had a cesarean or during your last delivery, if there were uterine adhesions or pelvic scars, it will be difficult to go through a healthy second pregnancy. Wounded tissue can affect the fertilization process next time.

You may also have developed conditions like endometriosis or blockage in the fallopian tube that can negatively impact the implantation of the embryo. A blockage or scar in the fallopian tube can lead to ectopic pregnancy. An ectopic pregnancy is when the embryo attaches itself to the lining of the fallopian tube instead of the uterus. In the presence of a blockage or scar, the egg will not reach the uterus and the fertilization takes place in the fallopian tube, which generally results in miscarriage.

Partner’s Health

Age matters both in women and men. The sperm quality may reduce as a man ages. Sometimes, there may be no movement in the sperms thus affecting the fertilization process or there may be a lower sperm count. If your spouse is of advanced age, you need to consult an infertility specialist doctor for a sperm analysis.
