IUI stands for “In Intrauterine Insemination”. It’s also sometimes called Donor Insemination, Alternative Insemination, or Artificial Insemination.
It works by putting sperm cells directly into your uterus around the time you’re ovulating, helping the sperm get closer to your egg. This cuts down on the time and distance sperm has to travel.
In general, IUI does two things: Medication taken before injection helps stimulate egg development, making a woman more fertile without medication.
Then, via Injection, the sperm is placed inside the uterine cavity, through the opening of the cervix, and to avoid swimming into the uterus on its own, allowing it to meet the egg more easily.

IUI Procedure
During the procedure, the male partner will be asked to provide a semen sample about an hour or two before it is scheduled for conception. This is done by masturbating in a sterile container at the IVF Specialist doctor’s office or at home. The semen is “washed” to separate the sperm from the semen.
This should be done before the sperm is injected into the uterus because the seminal fluid contains substances that can irritate your uterus. Sperm “washing” can also improve the ability of the sperm to fertilize the egg.
Who Needs IUI?
Women who may not ovulate, such as those with PCOS, or Hypothalamic patients
Women with unexplained infertility
Male partners with minor Semen Abnormalities or Ejaculatory Dysfunction
Male partners who have frozen sperm obtained prior to surgery, travel, or treatment for diseases
Anyone who needs donor sperm, such as LGBT couples, heterosexual couples struggling with male factor, or single women looking to conceive
The Benefits of Artificial Insemination via IUI
Success rates of intrauterine insemination (IUI) assisted by superovulation (from hormone treatments) range from 5 percent to 15 percent per cycle, depending on the age and reproductive health of the woman, as well as the condition of the man’s sperm.
Typically, three cycles of IUI are attempted and, if successful results are not achieved, your infertility specialist doctor will recommend more aggressive fertility treatments, such as In Vitro Fertilization (IVF).
Artificial insemination does not involve the collection of eggs from the woman’s uterus, nor does it require the administration of a general anesthetic, making it a much easier procedure to undergo – there are almost never complications as a result of the IUI procedure.
